Savannah County Day's Johnson and Woodville-Tompkins Ross score the Grassi Roofing/Coach's Corner Basketball Players of the Week

The Grassi Roofing/Coach's Corner Basketball Players of the Week:  Katherine Johnson, Savannah Country Day School. The Coach's Corner Boy's Basketball Player of the Week is Alfonzo Ross, Woodville-Tompkins High School.

 

Below is the information for these two players who had incredible numbers on the basketball court to earn the player of the week awards.

 

Grassi Roofing/Prep Sports Report Girl's Basketball Player of the Week

 

This Grassi Roofing/Prep Sports Report Girl's Basketball Player of the Week Award for January 16 to 21st of the season goes to Katherine Johnson, Savannah Country Day School.

Player: Katherine Johnson, senior forward/center

School: Savannah Country Day School (SCDS)

Sport: Girl's Basketball

Week: Jan 16, 2023 - Jan. 21, 2023

Games: January 17, 2023, vs. AE Beach High School; January 20, 2023, vs. Liberty County High School; January 21, vs. Sol C. Johnson

 

Highlights: In three games, Kat, known at SCDS, averaged a double-double for the week. She scored 63 points, averaged 21 points a game, pulled down 51 rebounds, 17 rebounds per game, and had 12 blocked shots.  

 

Coaches Comments: "Kat has proven to be one of the top players in the area. Her leadership, work ethic, and willingness to learn and challenge herself to be the best she can be to make her a joy to coach. I look forward to watching her success in the future," said Savannah Country Day School head girl basketball coach Kenny Conroy.

NOTE:  What is double double in basketball?

A double-double is a performance in which a basketball player accumulates a double-digit total in two of five statistical categories—points, rebounds, assists, steals, and blocked shots—in a game. The most common double-double combination is points and rebounds, followed by points and assists.

 

Coach's Corner/Prep Sports Report Boy's Basketball Player of the Week

 

This Coach's Corner/Prep Sports Report Boys' Basketball Player of the Week Award for January 16 to 21st goes to Alfonzo Ross of Woodville-Tompkins High School.

Player: Alfonzo Ross, senior guard

School: Woodville-Tompkins High School

Sport: Boy's Basketball

Week: Jan 16, 2023 - Jan. 21, 2023

Games: January 17, 2023, vs. Bryan County and January 20, 2023, vs. Savannah High School

 

Highlights: Alfonzo scored 62 points in his last two games. Against Bryan County High School, he tallied 33 points, his eighth 30-point game of the season. Then in a significant region win versus Savannah High School, Ross scored 29 points. 

 

Coaches Comments: "Alfonzo Ross is a true student-athlete on and off the court, along with maintaining a 3.6 GPA. He will go down as one of the best players that have come through Woodville Tompkins. His maturity, work ethic, and team-first mentality will help his success on the college level.," said of Woodville-Tompkins High School Lenny Williams.
