South Effingham Rallies Past Effingham County for 11th Straight Rivalry Win

In the yearly rivalry game, the South Effingham Lady Mustangs beat Effingham County High School 45-39. They achieved this victory in a come-from-behind effort.

The Lady Mustangs started the game in a tough spot, falling behind by 11 points early on. They ran their offense well and created good scoring chances, but their shots didn't go in. By halftime, South Effingham had only scored 12 points and was far behind. During the break, Coach Parker told the team to keep pushing, reminding them to trust their offensive play and highlighting the need for solid defensive rebounds and back-side rotations.

The game changed at the end of the third quarter. With five seconds left, freshman guard Kaylan Hamilton scored a mid-range buzzer-beater, bringing the Mustangs within two points. This set a positive tone for the final period. At the start of the fourth quarter, veterans Hayden Johanson and Kailyn Chapman showed calmness and leadership by hitting back-to-back three-pointers, boosting the offense. Meanwhile, sophomores Alayiah Lewis and Danni Lynn fought for important rebounds and added points, with Lynn scoring two key baskets.

Freshman Savannah France played well in the post, helping to control the area near the basket. Sophomore Cheniyah Jackson made a big impact off the bench, using her strong defense to grab two crucial rebounds that shifted the game's momentum in South Effingham's favor.

Coach Parker has now won seven games in a row against Effingham County during her four years as head coach. This victory extends the Lady Mustangs' winning streak in this rivalry to 11 games over six seasons. Even though they faced a team of experienced seniors from Effingham, the younger players from South Effingham showed resilience and strong teamwork. They proved their strength when it mattered the most.

Savannah High Young and Old Bluejackets Swarm in Win Over Screven County

Savannah High School boys' basketball opened up the GHSA Class A Division 2 Region 3 play with a 99-68 victory over Screven County. The Bluejackets got by with standout performances from their old and young players.

Senior guard Jermontae Brown led the charge with a game-high 35 points, adding four steals and three assists to his stat line. Pre-season All-State senior Maki Joyner contributed across the board with 21 points, seven rebounds, seven assists, and two steals, while classmate Zy Smart added 11 points, four rebounds, and three steals.

The Bluejackets started strong and never looked back, building momentum with a fast-paced offense and traditional Bluejacket-stifling defense. Head Coach George Brown praised his players, saying, "Our young guys getting in and producing right away was a key factor in the victory."

Coach Brown embodies the spirit of former Savannah High Head Coach Tim Jordan by incorporating his guiding principle into everything his team does. He often shares Jordan's wise words: "When you put in the effort, good things will come your way!"

As of now, the Savannah High Boys are at the top of the Sandysspeil.com Week 5 rankings. Their next challenge is an away game against Bryan County in Pembroke, Georgia, tonight, December 13, 2024, at 7:30 pm. Both teams head into this matchup with an overall record of 3-1.
