Brandon had a distinguished career with Memorial Day School in football. He was our leading wide receiver in passes caught and yards gained during his senior season.
He was an All Region player and did an outstanding job on both sides of the football. Brandon was not afraid to get off the ground and go after the football.
He is an outstanding athlete with great explosiveness off the ground and also has suitable length. He used those same skills in football to become one of our top rebounders in basketball.
He also was a lefty, so he was very hard to stop going to the rim. Brandon did so well in football that he signed a football scholarship with Savannah State University.
He is going there to join two other teammates that signed with them last season. Out of all the qualities Brandon has, I think there is one that stands out: he is one of the most coachable athletes I have ever had the pleasure of coaching. He is a polite young man and a, “yes sir, no sir” kind of guy.
Everything I asked him to do for our team, he did it to the best of his ability. Brandon not only was coachable, he also had a great attitude contagious among our team.
He was a point of positivity on our team, and I have never heard him say one negative thing about anyone on our team. I never heard him whine, complain or make excuses one time in the two years of coaching him.
He was also a great teammate. Everyone in our program respected Brandon, and if he spoke everyone listened.
I don’t think I heard him speak one word during his junior season. He was silent. He is also even minded, not getting too high or too low.
This year with the trust built up in our relationship, Brandon spoke to me several times and I would listen. He would always end his sentences with me, “Big Coach”.
I would say, “Brandon, I need more rebounds from you during your time on the court. Be ready to play as soon as you step off the bench.” It’s all about being effective and efficient. Brandon would say, "I got you, Big Coach” and invariably he did.
As Brandon ends one chapter of his life and begins another, I know we will miss him greatly. Everyone leaves a mark on this earth, and Brandon has left a mark on Memorial Day School and we are much better for it. Thank you, Brandon, for all the hard work and being a great teammate.
