As the head baseball coach at Calvary Day for many years, Kevin Farmer’s fondness for bunting, moving runners over, etc. became affectionately known as “Farmer Ball.” Now at Benedictine leading the Cadets, the coach hasn’t lost his small-ball approach and his 2021 team is further proof of this.

The Cadets (17-1) downed Region 3-4A foe Islands by a score of 9-1 on Tuesday, March 30 at Islands baseball field. Using three consecutive bunts in the fifth inning to break a close game wide-open, BC led the Sharks 1-0 through two innings at Islands High School Shark field.

A no-doubt solo homer off the bat of Will Walker in the third made it 2-0, and an RBI single by catcher Cody Cowan in the following frame put the Cadets up 3-0 entering the fifth.

Trent Markiton started for BC and struck out five Shark batters, earning the win on the bump. He allowed just one run, scattering six hits across six innings of work. Seemingly always ahead in the count, Markiton pounded the zone with strikes all evening and walked just one batter.

The bunting barrage led to two more BC runs in the fifth and a four-run sixth inning for the visitors was highlighted by RBI’s from Carter Holton, Clay Dean and Justin Thomas. Six of the nine BC starters collected a hit in the game.

Freshman southpaw Johnny Calloway was saddled with the loss for head coach Brandon Collins and Islands (5-5). The young pitcher was relatively solid against an intimidating BC lineup, but the Walker home run ultimately led to his removal after 68 pitches and three innings.

Calloway allowed two runs and two hits while striking out three.

Islands is back in action Thursday at Savannah Christian with first pitch slated for 5:30 pm. The Raiders are ranked No. 6 in Class A Private.

BC heads to Florida Thursday, April 1 for a pair of games versus out-of-state competition. Star senior pitcher and Vanderbilt commit Carter Holton is the likely starter for the Cadets in the 1 pm contest against a prestigious program in The Bolles School.
