The road to Lake Sinclair wasn’t smooth this year.
The weather changed the schedule. Rules had to be adjusted. But now, after months of qualifiers and crowded tournament fields, four local boats (2 members per boat), including three from Effingham County and one from South Effingham, are headed to the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Bass Fishing Championship with a shot at bringing home a title.
The fifth annual GHSA State Bass Fishing Championship will take place on May 9, 2026, at Lake Sinclair in Milledgeville.
For the teams that survived the qualifying season, this is what it all builds toward.
One lake. One weigh-in. One state champion.
The season started with the Lake Seminole qualifier on Jan. 31, but dangerous weather conditions forced GHSA and the Student Angler Federation to cancel the event because of safety concerns.
That cancellation changed the path to the state.
GHSA later released an alternative plan that added the canceled Lake Seminole qualifying spots into the remaining three qualifier tournaments. Under normal GHSA rules, the top 15 boats from each qualifier advance to the state championship, with additional qualifying spots added when tournament fields exceed 100 boats.
Because the Lake Seminole event was canceled, GHSA also allowed additional teams that had registered for that event to qualify through the remaining tournaments after the regular qualifying spots were awarded.
The final master list of state qualifiers was officially released by GHSA on April 14.
Who Qualified?
Several local teams earned their spot at Lake Sinclair during the qualifying season.
At the GHSA West Point Lake qualifier on Feb. 7, a tournament that featured 241 registered teams, Effingham County Rebels Bass Fishing teammates Colton Davis and Mason Waters qualified for state with an 11-pound, 14-ounce catch. Fellow Rebels anglers Ty Griffin and Ezra Martin also advanced after bringing in 11 pounds, 2 ounces.
The Clarks Hill qualifier on March 7 featured another packed field with 226 registered teams. Marshall Davis and Wade Collins from Effingham County secured a state berth during that event.
At the final qualifier at Lake Hartwell on April 11, South Effingham’s Ethan Darrow and Landon Turner qualified with an 11-pound, 14-ounce total to earn their trip to state.
Now the attention turns to Lake Sinclair.
Bass fishing is different from most high school sports. There’s no clock. No cheering crowd. Just patience, pressure, and the next cast.
And after a season packed with weather delays, rule adjustments, and long qualifying days on the water, local anglers now get their chance to compete for a GHSA state championship on the biggest stage of the season
