Soccer Rule Update: No Overtime in Non-Region Games

This season, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has introduced a significant change for non-region soccer games. If a match ends in a tie after 80 minutes, it will go directly to penalty kicks (PKs). There will be no overtime periods. This rule is mandatory and ensures that every game has a winner.

If a coach refuses to participate in PKs, their team will forfeit the match, and one goal will be added to the opponent’s final score. When reporting scores in the GHSA system, only one goal from the PK round is added to the winning team’s total. For example, if a game ends 2-2 in regulation and Team A wins PKs 4-3, the final score is recorded as 3-2 in favor of Team A.

Football Rule Update: Equipment and Play Adjustments

The National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) has made several football rule changes for 2025. One of the most significant updates involves player equipment:

  • Electronic Communication: Coaches can communicate plays using fixed electronic signs and non-audio methods, but in-helmet communication remains banned.
  • No Video or Audio Devices: Players cannot wear devices that record or transmit video or audio during games.
  • Tooth and Mouth Protectors: Mouthguards must serve a protective function and cannot include unnecessary attachments.
  • Arm Sleeves Regulation: By 2027, all arm sleeves must meet SFIA standards and have a visible certification label.

Another key rule change affects fumbles: when a forward fumble goes out of bounds, the ball is returned to the spot of the fumble instead of the point where it crossed the sideline. It stops teams from gaining more yards when there are fumbles.

These rules are essential for keeping the game moving, fair and orderly.
