Who Is 78 Years Strong and Still Handing off Football Awards?

The Savannah Quarterback Club, founded in 1946, is the oldest in Georgia. Its goal is to encourage football spirit, fellowship, and knowledge among its Savannah community members. The club holds a weekly meeting from September to January, concluding with its annual bowl party. This year is no different!

The Savannah Quarterback Club held its first and second meetings for the 78th year of the club for the 2024 football season at the Savannah Elks Lodge. Players from Benedictine Military Academy, Bethesda Academy, Calvary Day School, New Hampstead High School, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, and Savannah County Day School scored SQC Player of the Week awards.   

Guest speakers were Bill King, the host of the Bill King Show, a college football radio show heard across the Southeast of the United States. The second week was Savannah native and former University of Georgia Sports Information Director Claude Felton. The guest speakers spoke to the club members and answered questions. The following standout football players below were honored.


WEEK 1
Offensive Players of the Week:
Zo Smalls, Savannah Christian Preparatory School, Running Back
In Savannah Christian's 35-7 victory over Whitefield Academy, Smalls ran for 166 yards and scored two touchdowns on 22 carries.

Defensive Players of the Week:
Tyler Scott, Savannah Country Day, Linebacker
In Savannah Country Day's 22-21 loss to Charlotte Country Day (N.C.), Scott had 13 tackles and two quarterback hurries.

WEEK 2
Offensive Players of the Week:
Stephen Cannon, Benedictine - Quarterback
In his second start in high school, Cannon threw for 183 yards and a touchdown, rushed for 70 yards, and scored two touchdowns. 

Defensive Players of the Week:
Elijah Griffin, Savannah Christian Preparatory School - Defensive Lineman
In a 35-7 win over New Hampstead, Griffin made five tackles by himself with two sacks.

WEEK 3
Co-Offensive Players of the Week:  
Rashawn Truell, New Hampstead High School - Quarterback 
Truell passed the ball 33 times out of 49 attempts for 466 yards and 5 touchdowns in a 47-44 win against Effingham County High School.

Co-Offensive Players of the Week:

Kamari Maxwell, New Hampstead - Wide Reciever
Maxwell had 16 catches for 284 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Effingham County High School.

Defensive Players of the Week: 
Isaiah Reynolds, Bethesda Academy - Defensive Tackle
Reynolds, a defensive tackle, had eight tackles and five sacks in the Blazer's 34-14 loss to Hilton Head Christian.

WEEK 4
Offensive Players of the Week:
Brooks Kleinpeter, Savannah Country Day - Tightend
Kleeinpeter caught 11 passes for 123 yards and scored one touchdown in a 44-16 victory against Bluffton HS!

Defensive Players of the Week: 
Cutter Powell, Calvary Day School, Middle Linebacker 
In Calvary's win over Southeast Bulloch, Powell made 15 tackles.

This week's Savannah Quarterback Club huddle, scheduled for September 30th, was postponed. As a result, the players of the week for Weeks 5 and 6 will be announced next week.
