The Georgia High School State Association state track and field championships will start tomorrow, Thursday, May 11, 2023, and go through Saturday. There are 17 schools from the Savannah area attending, and over 150 athletes dreaming of being on top of the winner's podium. The championships will occur at four locations, depending on the classification below.
Where:
Hugh Mills Stadium, Albany (Class 3A & Class 4A)
Teams at this location are Benedictine and New Hampstead in Class 4A. Class 3A the teams are Beach, Calvary, Johnson, Savannah Christian, Savannah Country Day, and St. Vincent's Academy.
Kinnett Stadium, Columbus (Class 5A)
HV Jenkins High School will represent Savannah in class 5A.
McEachern HS, Powder Springs (Class 2A & Class 7A)
At the Class 2A meet will be Savannah Arts Academy and Windsor Forest.
In Class 7A, a large contingent of track and field athletes from Richmond Hill High School.
Barron Stadium, Rome (Class A-Div. 1, Class 6A & Adapted)
The Class 6A representatives will be from Effingham and South Effingman High Schools. In A-D1 will be Bryan County High School, Savannah High School, and Woodville-Tompkins High School.
Over 150 athletes who qualified from the Savannah area will be there to win a state championship in their event. Three defending state champions are trying to repeat, and one is going for a three-peat.
Savannah Christian's senior Maggie Byrd has won two state titles, GHSA Class A Private high jump, and Bryd will try to win her third title in GHSA Class 3A this year. Byrd's teammate from Savannah Christian, junior Jamari McIvory, won the last GHSA Class A Private 400 meters in 48.49 seconds. Savannah Arts Academy senior Lyric Olson took the 800 title in Class 3A. All three athletes are looking for the gold medal again.
