For the seventh year in a row, the Benedictine Cadets are Georgia High School Assocation (GHSA) track and field region champs. The Cadets have won first place in six of their eight regular season meets this season.

“Track is a grueling sport. It’s physically and mentally tough,” said Cadets’ Coach Galen Houston. “We have a bunch of kids on our team that are very talented. They love to practice. They love to work hard and be challenged, and they respond well to adverse situations. They’re able to perform when the stakes are high and bring their best when it’s required.”

Even amidst a run as incredible as the one Benedictine is on, this year’s team is special.

“This has by far been our deepest and most complete team we’ve had since we’ve been here for sure.” “This group has broken or tied seven MileSplit track and field records at the school, so that speaks to the talent and overall depth of our team, and there are four more events that we can break during sectionals and state that we’re really close to breaking. We can’t say enough great things about this particular team this year. It’s a really great group that we have,” Houston said.

One thing you could attribute BC’s depth to is the role that its upperclassmen play in building its team culture. The Cadets rely on the upperclassmen to mentor the underclassmen, drive the program’s culture, and encourage the next man up.

“Those are the guys that are the leaders and have the most experience on the team. They can be good mentors and be good stewards of the culture that you’re trying to establish within your program,” said Houston. “When guys are maybe not running the times that they want to run, you have those upperclassmen that are basically like assistant coaches. They’re helping drive your culture and encourage the young guys. We need those upperclassmen to be able to maintain a region championship streak like we’ve been blessed to have.”

Benedictine’s depth shines this time of year due to the experience that everyone on the team gets throughout the season.

“During meets we like to spread the wealth around, because we also know that track and field is a great avenue to help some of our guys get recruited and get documented times on their athleticism and their speed, so we like to spread certain events around throughout the season to reward the underclassmen,” Houston said.

Benedictine will face some unique challenges next year because several of its most talented athletes will enroll early in colleges for other sports during the spring of their senior year, foregoing their senior track season.

“We’re happy and proud of those kids for being able to put themselves in a position to have those opportunities [to enroll early], but no doubt, guys will have to step up,” said Houston.

Benedictine will go to sectionals on May 3rd in Ellenwood, Georgia.
