Woodville-Tompkins High School's 1,000-point club is rising in the school's short and rich basketball history. This month the Wolverines added two new members, seniors Janiyah Heyward and Alfonzo Ross.
Woodville Tompkins senior Janiyah Heyward became the newest Wolverines' 1,000-point club member. Janiyah finished with a double-double scoring 17 points and pulling down 12 rebounds. Heyward needed 14 points going into the region contest on Tuesday, December 13, 2022, against Metter High School. Woodville-Tompkins would go on and win 71-22. Heyward was a Savannah Morning News preseason top-girls player to watch.
Woodville-Tompkins girls head coach Jeff Roberson said, "Janiyah is one of the most talented players I've coached at Woodville Tompkins. She has an offer from East Georgia. Honestly, she is not challenged enough at practice because we don't have anyone that can guard her. She reminds me so much of Charles Barkley with her style of play. I call her "Barkley".
Heyward is the third player to score 1,000 points in the program's history. Jazmin Grayson scored 1,000. Jazmin currently plays at Benedict College. Savanna Walker scored 2000 points as a Wolverine. Walker currently plays at Central Arkansas.
On December 2, 2022, in Woodville-Tompkins boy's win over Claxton, 78-43, senior guard Alfonzo Ross added his name to a growing list of the 1000-point Wolverine scorers. Ross scored 30 points in the game. Ross was also a Savannah Morning News and Prep Sports Report preseason top-boys player to watch.
Wolverines head boys coach Lenny Williams said, "Alfonzo Ross has established himself as one of the best players to come through Woodville Tompkins HS. He is a true student-athlete that focuses on academics and has a 3.6 HOPE GPA. The future is bright for AJ, and I look forward to him improving and guiding our program for the rest of the season."
Ross becomes the fourth player to join the club. The other three Wolverines are Preston Crisp, Charleston Willingham, and Bernard Pelote.
