Area junior golfers advance in Drive, Chip & Putt qualifer

Savannah's Rivers Hood, Richmond Hill's Georgia McDonald and Pooler's Levi Henson medaled in their age groups at at Drive, Chip & Putt local qualifier on July 16 at Jeykll Island Golf Club on Jekyll Island, Ga.

Hood won the Boys 12-13 age group with 149 points, McDonald won the Girls 12-13 age group with 118 points and Henson won the Boys 14-15 age group with 139 points. Qualifiers moving on to the next stage from the Jekyll Island site also included Savannah's Luke Sage in Boys 7-9, Richmond Hill's Lou Kivett in Boys 10-11 and Savannah's Ellie Johnson in Girls 10-11.

Savannah's Parker Mitchell is an alternate in Girls 10-11, and Savannah's Eden Stanley is an alternate in Girls 14-15. 

The players from the Jekyll Island qualifier advance to the Sub Regional qualifier being played August 16 at the Landings Golf & Athletic Club on Skidaway Island.    

Drive, Chip & Putt is a joint initiative founded in 2013 by the Masters Tournament, United States Golf Association and The PGA of America. It's a free nationwide junior golf development competition aimed at growing the game by focusing on the three fundamental skills employed in golf.

Participants who advance through local, sub-regional and regional qualifying in each age/gender category earn a place in the National Finals, which is conducted at Augusta National Golf Club the Sunday before the Masters Tournament and is broadcast live by Golf Channel.
