What started as a new sport to try and was fun at first turned out to be a state championship. The Calvary Day School Lady Cavaliers flag football team captured the inaugural Georgia High School Association Class 5A-A Flag Football Championship. The Lady Cavaliers remained undefeated on the road to the title, winning seven games and trying two on the season. One of those opponents who Calvary tied was their opposition in the state champIonship game. The Portal Panthers. Calvary won the Class 5A-A state title defeating Portal 6-0.

The first half was a scoreless battle, but the Lady Cavaliers got on the scoreboard first with a little more than 9 minutes to go in the contest. Quarterback sophomore Hannah Cail connected on an 11-yard pass to senior Katie Ellenwood for a 6-0 lead. The point after the try failed.

Portal did not lay down, and what seemed like a big play and the tying touchdown was negated by a penalty. The Panther quarterback threw an apparent short pass tipped by a Calvary defender and went into a Panther's receiver's hand. The Portal receiver raced down the sideline for the tying touchdown, but an illegal contact (block) by a Portal player brought the ball back to the line of scrimmage and no touchdown.

The Panthers had another try to tie the game, but senior Lady Cavalier Nevaeh Hamilton came up with an enormous play, an interception. There was only 1:35 left in the game when Hamilton's play secured a 6-0 victory over Portal because the Panthers had no timeouts remaining. Portal couldn't stop the clock. The Lady Cavaliers offense took three plays to run out the clock and became the first-ever GHSA Flag Football championship team. The Lady Cavaliers are bringing "The Ship" trophy safely back to Savannah, Georgia.

Here is the official Calvary Day School Lady Cavilers Flag Football Team Roster. Congratulations to the Coaching staff Chad Griffin, Nick Grassi, Joe Newton, the players, and the Calvary Day School community. GO CAVS!
