Senior Mason Gaylord delivered a record-setting performance to lead Calvary Day to a 13-3 win over Bluffton High School earlier this season, scoring six goals and adding five assists for a program-record 11 points in a single game.

Through the Cavaliers’ first four games, Gaylord has 23 points, setting an early tone for the season and continuing to establish himself as one of the team’s most important leaders.

Along with his skill on the field, his leadership, shaped by his Christian faith, has played a major role in Calvary Day’s success.

When Gaylord found an opportunity to play lacrosse as an eighth grader, he instantly fell in love with the game.

“Something led me to go to the lacrosse interest meeting, and I think God had His way,” Gaylord said. “I ended up meeting some of my best friends in this sport and being able to play a sport where I can lead and excel.”

His decision to take up lacrosse proved successful, as he became a four-year starter and cemented his role as team captain, a title he has held twice.

Calvary Day’s Head Coach Phillip Yount explains the advantage the young captain’s leadership brings to the Calvary Day lacrosse program.

“He’s been a contributor for four years, so we can count on him,” Yount said. “He leads by example, leads through his words, says the right things, and does the right things.”

Yount has also played a major role in Gaylord’s development, mentoring him both as a player and as a leader.

“He kind of comes down to our level and treats us like brothers — young men in Christ,” Gaylord said. “To be able to have that relationship with a coach is something we shouldn’t take for granted.”

Gaylord not only excels on the field but is also a star in the classroom. He serves in a leadership role at the school as a “Spiritual Life Prefect.”

In this role, Gaylord helps lead his peers in their faith,  including opening and closing the weekly school chapel in prayer.

“The Bible stresses that we are one in the kingdom of God,” Gaylord said. “I’m going to hold my brothers in Christ accountable for their actions, whether it’s in the classroom, on the field, or in games.”

Gaylord also emphasizes the importance of humility.

“What you are given is something to fall back on,” Gaylord said. “Our identity is found in Christ, and He gives us these blessings and skills to be able to play the game we love instead of glorifying ourselves.”

The senior’s humble nature and leadership qualities have garnered the respect of his teammates.

Teammate Caedmon Crunkleton acknowledged Gaylord’s leadership.

“Mason as a leader has always been someone people look up to,” Crunkleton said. “He has gained more and more respect from teammates as the time has gone by. Being able to lead how he does and be the player he is garners much respect.”

For Gaylord, lacrosse represents more than just competition.

He stresses the importance of relationships with teammates and the impact that chemistry has on game day.

“Being here for four years, I've been able to build a relationship with the team and the guys,” Gaylord said. “Hanging out on the weekends and playing year-round together builds chemistry. It makes winning games a lot easier, too.”

Gaylord doesn’t view lacrosse as a way to chase statistics or personal attention. Instead, he sees it as an opportunity to serve his team and lead his brothers.

His influence has played a key role in the Cavaliers’ recent success and could prove critical as Calvary Day pushes deeper into the season.

For Gaylord, humility, faith, and brotherhood remain the foundation of everything he brings to the field.
