The Georgia High School Association (GHSA) has announced changes to the football and softball schedules due to severe weather damage across the state from Hurricane Helene. The football regular season will now end on Friday, November 8th, instead of the original date, November 1st. This change allows schools affected by the storm to make up missed games. The first round of the state playoffs will be pushed back to November 15th and 16th.

Here are the key date changes for football:

  • November 1: Original last Friday of the regular season
  • November 8: New last Friday of the regular season (make-up games)
  • November 15-16: Round 1 of playoffs
  • November 22: Round 2
  • November 29: Quarterfinals
  • December 6: Semifinals
  • December 16-18: Finals at Mercedes-Benz Stadium

Schools unaffected by the storm will have an open week before the playoffs. Schools that missed two or more weeks of games may need to play a condensed schedule with approval from the GHSA.

Softball dates have also been revised. The last play date is now October 12th, with playoff qualifiers being determined on the same day. The first and second rounds of playoffs will also shift by a few days.

The GHSA hopes the remainder of the season goes smoothly and will release further updates as needed.
