Coach Seth Gaspin, a lifelong Savannahian, achieved a significant coaching milestone on February 28, 2024, when he secured his 400th victory against Windsor Forest High School. With over 29 years of experience in coaching baseball, Coach Gaspin has been grinding his skills since 1995.
In a recent interview, Seth Gaspin, the Head Baseball Coach at HV Jenkins High School, answered questions about his playing days, coaching career, philosophy, and reaching milestones.
Coach Seth Gaspin stepped up to the plate and did a question-and-answer interview on reaching 400 wins and more! Here it is below.
PSR: Congratulations on your 400th career win! What does achieving this milestone mean to you, especially considering the journey of the HV Jenkins baseball program under your leadership?
Coach Gaspin: 400 wins wouldn't be possible without the players, assistant coaches, administrators, and especially my family, who have been with me every step of the way. It's a tribute to their dedication.
PSR: Your commitment to Savannah area athletics is inspiring. How do you manage coaching duties with your involvement in other aspects of the school's athletic programs?
Coach Gaspin: Sports have always been a significant influence on my life. I love baseball, but I also played and coached football and basketball. My love for sports has made me invest in the athletic program wherever I worked. Growing up in Savannah, I wanted to ensure baseball remained important here.
PSR: With your experience and success across various sports, what are the key ingredients to leading teams to victory and building a winning culture?
Coach Gaspin: Three things:
- Upbringing: My parents instilled a strong work ethic, allowing me to learn from successes and failures.
- Self-discipline: I strive to ensure no one outworks me or my programs.
- Focus on the players: Being hard but fair, showing them I care, and reminding them it's about them, not just winning.
PSR: Achieving 400 wins is a testament to your coaching skills. Can you share your coaching philosophy and its evolution over your career?
Coach Gaspin: It's about hard work, believing in what I do, and letting the players know I care. Savannah's kids know sincerity, so being genuine is crucial. My philosophy has evolved. Initially, I enforced uniformity, but now, we work with individual strengths and acknowledge that not everyone learns the same way.
PSR: Looking back, what moments or achievements are particularly memorable?
Coach Gaspin: State championships, final fours, and playoff bids are highlights. However, I'm most proud of teams that weren't initially talented but improved significantly by the season's end. Those, with my assistant Billy McCadams, are the most rewarding experiences.
PSR: As you look ahead, what are your aspirations for the future of Jenkins baseball and the legacy you hope to leave?
Coach Gaspin: I'm an optimist who believes we can always make the best of any situation. That's how I feel about Jenkins baseball's future. As for legacy, I'd like to be remembered as a coach who made my players better men, fathers, husbands, and sons, not just better baseball players. I'm incredibly grateful to do what I love and be surrounded by such amazing people.
In summary, Coach Seth Gaspin's achievement of 400 wins showcases his passion for coaching, commitment to players and staff, support from administrators and family, and deep love for the coaching profession.
Coach Gaspin has long been a part of Savannah's sports scene, playing a role in multiple athletic programs. His dedication to coaching and genuine concern for his players have left a lasting impression on the community of those who have played for him in the past, those playing for him now, and those he will coach in the future. Great job, Coach!
