He is back. Tony Welch is returning to the gridiron in Savannah, Georgia as the new head football coach at HV Jenkins High School. Welch had to make a tough decision as he steps down from his alma mater Claxton High School. Welch spent the last four seasons compiling an 18-23 record and reaching the state playoffs two times with the Tigers.
Before his tenure at Claxton, Welch also roamed the sidelines as an assistant coach and head coach at Memorial Day School and the head man at Savannah High. At Memorial Day School, he was the head coach in 2006, 2007, and then as an assistant when Memorial Day School won four state championships from 2008-2013 under Michael Thompson in six seasons.
At Savannah High, as the head football coach Welch led the Blue Jackets to its first winning season in 21 years (1995) going 9-3 and playoff appearance in 23 years (1993). The Blue Jackets defeated Cook County High School in the first round of the Georgia High School Association 2016 season state playoffs. Savannah lost to Westminister in round two.
Welch takes over the HV Jenkins High School football program, which is just two years removed from the Warrior's best season in school history. The Warriors won the Region 3-AAA title and proceeded to the GHSA Class AAA state semifinals in 2019.
