The Savannah Coastal Swim League has begun another season in Savannah. According to past president Eric Wayner, the SCSL has been a steady fixture during the summer since the 1960s. The league provides the fundamentals of swimming with competitive swim meets in Savannah, Georgia. There are nine active teams for the 2022 season, with more than 500 swimmers.
This year's league administrators are President Emily Stigall, Vice President Krista Wolk, and Amy Schaffer, the secretary/treasurer. "Each team holds practices during May to prepare for the season. Swimmers typically practice at their team's pool three to five days a week," said Stigall and Krista Wolk.
"During practices, teams work on the fundamentals of freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, and butterfly, as well as starts and turns. The coaches stress the importance of teamwork and overall good sportsmanship." Furthermore, Stigall and Wolk stated, "What is intriguing is that many of the SCSL team coaches are current or former competitive swimmers and former swimmers who took part in the SCSL."
Swimmers range from 6 to 18, broken down into six divisions. The divisions are six and under, eight and under, 9-10 years of age, 11-12, 13-14, and 15-18. The swim meets are either dual meets or tri-meets, where two or three teams compete against each other for points, and swim meets began on May 31.
President Emily Stigall said, "This year, we also have a weekly theme to make the swim meets more fun. " Themes for the meets were week one Salute to America, week two Hawaiian, this week (week three) Neon Nights, week four Tie Dye, and week five Pirates.
Week 1 Theme - Salute to America (Savannah Quarters Sailfish Swim Team)
There are two league-wide meets in which all teams compete against each to wrap up the season at the Chatham County Aquatic Center. The Rising Stars meet, which will take place on June 29, is the league's final meet for novice and developmental swimmers. The season will culminate the next day with the City Championship on June 30.
