Richmond Hill Cross Country: New Season, New Rising Stars, Still Running Strong!

For Julia Anastasio, running at a record pace didn't occur overnight. In fact, the Richmond Hill sophomore gradually evolved into a regional 1-7A champion (19.33.80) and a seventh-place finisher (19:48, the best of any Savannah-based runner) at the state meet last season.

"I started running in first grade, and I really started understanding the sport," recalled Anastasio. "I really became focused in fourth grade.

"It has taken a few years to become interested in this sport and to be committed. Last year was a great season for me. I had a great time with the team and was always excited to race, which helped me perform really well."

So, what can Anastasio do for an encore? She'll be back in the hunt to defend her regional title as well as seeking to enhance her placement at the state meet. Anastasio also lead the pack this fall for a  program that will retool instead of rebuild, as they graduated a few core runners last season, one being Memphis Rich, a three-time regional champion.

Yet, head coach Levi Sybert still has runners from a girl's team that has won the top team regional spot for 12 consecutive years, while the boys' squad claimed their 11th straight title.

"The team's success is a testament to the athletes and coaching staff's hard work and dedication," said Sybert. "We had some really good performers last year, and now we'll look to the next group.

"We're going to redefine the team culture. It's a pretty young team, and there will be a lot of opportunities."

Sybert welcome 73 runners into the fold, noting roughly half of them are new to the program. Aside from Anastasio, freshman Chloe Miller has been impressive as well as senior Ben Hall and junior Carter Dietrich, who both have caught Sybert's eye in the early going.

"Chloe has been running with our top group, and she looks good," said Sybert. "Ben and Carter should both have pretty good years."

As for Anastasio, Sybert believes she can make a further impact.

"When she first came in this summer, she looked really good," beamed Sybert. "Any athlete in any sport who excels has to deal with high expectations, and she is not letting it get in her way.

"She is extremely focused and ready."

Despite her perceived demeanor, Anastasio is aware of the expectations ahead. Her fastest 5K was 18:27 at the Alexander / Asics Invitational last year, and her average was roughly 19 minutes. She also was second at the Orthowest Invitational.

"Yes, I do feel a slight bit of pressure this year compared to last year because I'm just wanting to improve," she stressed. "But, overall, I am very excited for this upcoming season, and I feel like I can work a lot harder now that I know what to expect.

"I'm excited for the newcomers, and I'm hoping that I can contribute to the success of the season."
