Since their conception in 2019, Savannah Country Day School’s middle school clay target shoot team has been finding their mark.
This time around, though, they hit the bullseye.

Savannah Country Day recently captured the Middle State Georgia Championship. The Hornets achieved a score of 525 out of a possible 600 to edge 12 other middle school team for the crown. Roughly 175 students participated.

They worked very hard, and this is quite an accomplishment,” said head coach Eric Haas. “We had some individuals who did very well, but this was a true team effort. We have a solid lineup that has contributed along the way.”

Archer Ritchie was the Hornets’ top shooter, as he accumulated a score of 185 out of 200. He was followed by Caleb Vo, who hit, and Raj Kamaleson had 166. Ritchie finished as the HOA (highest overall athlete) state runner-up.

In the skeet fields, Vo shot a perfect 50 of 50—his first 50 straight in competition—to win top honors. Ritchie placed second overall with a 47 after winning his shoot-off.

In the trap fields, Ritchie finished first with 45 of 50 after a three-way shoot-off. Finally, Ritchie placed second in the sporting clays course with a 93 of 100.

Along with the above-mentioned players, rounding out the roster are Charles Cox, John Culver, Catherine Montgomery, James Wilson, and Cort Reames. Haas also praised assistant coaches, Neil Salyer, Tim Short, Khoi Vo, Jeremy Wachtel, Drew Wilkes, Corde Wilson, Harry Woolley, Christina Buerger, Andy Daters, and John Garceau for their continued support. For the Hornets, overall success is the program, and it has been a staple for them.

Haas, who has served as head coach for the past three years and has coached six overall in the program, believes his team has benefitted from the support of the Forest City Gun Club and the 17 South Rod and Gun Club. He also noted that the GIAA school program runs in the fall, and the SCTP club season occurs in spring, allowing athletes to compete throughout the year.
