Seniors Lead Benedictine, Richmond Hill, Savannah Christian to Region Titles, Into Sectionals This Saturday

For high school track and field athletes that have qualified, the sectional meets this Saturday represent the last hurdle to advancing to the state championship meets.

The sectionals are also, for the seniors, one stage closer to the end of their scholastic careers and potentially their last time competing before graduating this month.

Richmond Hill boys and girls track coach Levi Sybert said the seniors in the program are “finishing up just the way we want them to.” The girls won the Region 1-7A title in dominant fashion, while the Wildcats placed second in the boys competition.

“I was just talking to a couple of them today about how special this is to be doing this so long, and being at the end and still performing really high is not easy to do,” Sybert said Monday. “When you really succeed really early, to keep that taste for so long. They’ve done a really good job of being reliable and getting better. It’s really cool.”

Among the seniors who have sustained success are sprinter and hurdler Jayla Lawrence and distance runners Julia Wilson, Memphis Rich and the head coach’s son, Noah Sybert (see region results below).

Lawrence and Wilson have signed with Georgia Southern. Rich has signed with Appalachian State, while Sybert will run for Kennesaw State.

“They’re going to have to work a little harder than they did last year, but I think they’ll be all right,” said Levi Sybert, whose teams will compete in the sectional at Valdosta High. “They’re peaking at the right time.”

Deedee Colter, the Savannah Christian boys and girls track coach for 17 years, also credited the contributions of the veteran 12th-graders on the squad. The Raiders won the Region 3-3A boys crown and were second in girls.

“This team is very, very strong,” Colter said. “We have a lot of seniors, so that helps to make it strong.”

She noted seniors such as sprinter Jamari McIvory, the defending champion in Class 3A in the 200 and 400 meters, and sprinter and jumper Shiv Patel. On the girls’ side, senior Jadyn Singleton is the defending state champ in the long jump and a top contender as well in the triple jump and in the sprints.

“We’re looking forward to probably (personal records for Singleton) at sectionals going to state,” said Colter, whose teams will compete at the sectional at Peach County High School in Fort Valley.

She said that McIvory, also a defensive back who has a football scholarship to Northern Illinois, has a goal to successfully defend his two state titles.

“He can definitely repeat,” said Colter, also lauding the abilities of Patel as a contender, especially in the high jump.

The Benedictine Cadets have captured a region title every year since 2018 – not including the 2020 season abbreviated by the COVID pandemic. Crowns have come in classes 2A, 3A and now 4A for the all-boys school.

Galen Houston, in his 10th year as head coach, liked the way the Cadets performed last week at the region meet last week at Burke County.

“We had roughly an 18-point lead coming after the field events, which was a little bit of a surprise,” Houston said. “Normally, we’re somewhat behind during the field events and we make up ground during the running events. But we really excelled this year in the field events, which got us out to a great lead.”

Henry Sink won the high jump, with fellow senior La’Don Bryant third; senior Talan Waddell broke 130 feet (130, 11 inches) for third in the discus, with junior Herbert “Third” Scroggins in fourth. The top four in each event qualify for sectionals, which for BC are at Baldwin High in Milledgeville.

Senior Jeremiah “Tank” Thomas took third in the shot put, meaning he’s not done yet with his high school career. Thomas, also a defensive lineman, recently signed to play college football at Benedict College.

“Everybody was so happy and excited that this won’t be the end of him competing,” said Houston, also the BC football team’s defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. “(Thomas) earned a scholarship and will be able to play at Benedict College and continue his football career and education there. We’re happy for him on both fronts.”

Another key senior for the BC track team is Na’Seir Samuel, who has dealt with a “nagging hamstring injury” this season, Houston said. The coach said they didn’t rush Samuel back, letting him heal so he can “be healthy for when it really matters in track at regional, sectional and state time so he can perform at his best.”

“We were able to get him healthy toward the end of the season so he can finish off his track and field career in his senior year the right way, which is, hopefully, an opportunity to be on the podium for the state finals,” Houston said.

Samuel won the 400 dash and ran one leg of the victorious 4x400 relay team.

Benedictine also won the 4x100, placed second in the 4x200 and third in the 4x800 to qualify all of its relay teams for sectionals. The top eight in each event at the upcoming stage qualify for state.

“We like our chances,” Houston said. “If you look at the relays right now, we have a great opportunity for really all four of our relays to make it.”

Much will depend on the availability of junior John Dodson, a standout distance runner who has been hurt and sat out a relay and the 800 finals after winning his preliminary heat. Dodson still won the 1,600 and 3,200 races.

“John is a very quiet kid, very modest but extremely hard-working and is a fierce competitor,” Houston said. “He had a very tough, gritty performance during region. We’re not as successful as a team and we don’t win region without John Dodson and Na’Seir Samuel.”

Each team has underclassmen already proven to be big point collectors. For Benedictine, the list includes sprinters Stanley Smart Jr. (freshman), Chris “Bubba” Frazier (sophomore), Michael Hogan (junior) and Stephen Cannon III (sophomore hurdler); and distance runners Cole Minnich (freshman) and William Hoffman (freshman).

For the Richmond Hill boys, among the impactful underclassmen are sprinters Billy Cunningham (junior, also a jumper), Santonio Rio (junior), distance runner Benjamin Hall (junior), hurdler Kendrick Joshua (sophomore) and pole vaulter Garret Mcdade (junior). For the girls, sprinters Kinley Gibson (freshman) and Mmekom Inyang (junior, also hurdler and shot put), distance runners Julia Anastasio (freshman) and Jolee “Joey” Mitchell (sophomore), hurdler Maleaha Pritchett (freshman) and thrower Jada Brown (junior).

For Savannah Christian boys, the list includes distance runner Pierce Goodman (sophomore) and hurdler and pole vaulter Carson Taylor (sophomore). For the SCPS girls, pole vaulter Kelley Webb, thrower Mollie Poppell (junior), sprinter Leighton Stallcup (junior), hurdler Payton Livington (junior) and distance runner Lydia Amick (freshman).

Amick won the 800 and1,600 and ran on the 4x400 and 4x800 teams, but she won’t be available for sectionals because of a family commitment, Colter said.
