Three More Reasons Savannah Football Is Making Noise

SAVANNAH — Summer workouts are underway across the Coastal Empire, but three Savannah-area football standouts have already made some of the biggest decisions of their athletic careers.

Benedictine Military School wide receiver Eron Mallard committed to Purdue on June 8, while Calvary Day School wide receiver M.J. Knight Jr. announced his commitment to Georgia Southern on June 12. Fellow Calvary Day standout Brexton Bell followed on June 14 with his commitment to Appalachian State.

The commitments continue a strong Class of 2027 recruiting class from the Savannah area and give local fans three more reasons to keep an eye on the upcoming 2026 season.

Mallard's Headed to Purdue

When Eron Mallard gets the football in his hands, defenders quickly learn they are chasing one of the fastest athletes in Georgia.

The Benedictine standout emerged as one of the Cadets' top offensive weapons last season. Mallard caught 32 passes for 657 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging 20.5 yards per reception. He also rushed for 396 yards and four touchdowns while adding 371 yards on kick returns.

His big-play ability helped him earn first-team All-Region 1-4A honors.

Football is only part of the story.

Mallard is also one of the state's top sprinters. He owns a wind-legal personal best of 10.62 seconds in the 100-meter dash and placed third at the GHSA Class 4A State Track and Field Championships.

That combination of football production and elite speed attracted attention from college programs across the country before he ultimately chose Purdue.

The commitment gives the Boilermakers one of Georgia's most explosive Class of 2027 athletes.

Knight Stays Close to Home in Statesboro

Few athletes in the Savannah area have been as versatile as M.J. Knight Jr.

Whether on the football field, basketball court, or track, the Calvary Day standout has built a reputation as one of the area's most complete athletes.

Last season, Knight hauled in 46 receptions for 780 yards and 13 touchdowns for the Cavaliers. Four of those touchdown receptions came during the state playoffs as Calvary Day made another deep postseason run.

His athletic accomplishments extend well beyond football.

Knight was recognized as the Most Versatile Athlete at the 73rd Annual Ashley Dearing Awards and also received the Savannah Morning News Most Versatile Athlete honor.

On June 12, Knight announced his commitment to Georgia Southern.

In addition to football, Knight plans to pursue a degree in engineering while competing for the Eagles.

The decision allows him to continue his athletic and academic career at one of Georgia's top Group of Five programs while remaining close to home, according to Dennis Knight of the Savannah Morning News.

Bell Brings Toughness, going to Appalachian State.

Brexton Bell has earned respect across Georgia in two different sports.

On the football field, Bell has developed into one of the top defensive backs in the state.

On the wrestling mat, he has established himself among Georgia's elite competitors.

Bell committed to Appalachian State on June 14 after building an impressive athletic resume at Calvary Day.

His success in wrestling may best illustrate the toughness he brings to every sport he plays.

Bell reached the GHSA Class 3A State Wrestling Finals for the second consecutive year and finished as a state runner-up for the second straight season. He posted a 20-1 record during the most recent campaign while continuing to establish himself as one of the state's top wrestlers.

That same competitive drive has made him one of the Cavaliers' top football players and a highly sought-after college prospect.

Now he will take those talents to Appalachian State, a program known for developing tough, physical football players.

A Strong Summer for Savannah-Area Football

The commitments by Mallard, Knight, and Bell add to what has already been an impressive recruiting summer for Savannah-area football.

For local coaches, parents, and fans, the announcements are another reminder of the talent being developed across the Coastal Empire.

For the players, the commitments represent years of work in the weight room, on practice fields, and in competition.

And while college football is now part of the future for all three athletes, each still has one more high school season remaining.

That means Savannah-area football fans will get one final opportunity to watch Mallard, Knight, and Bell compete before they begin the next chapter of their athletic careers.
