Where is former New Hampstead High School standout Phoenix three-sport standout student-athlete Calvin Turner Jr. now? Well, Turner has found a home. After playing three football seasons at Jacksonville University, who shut down their football program in 2019. Calvin choose going to the far west, the University of Hawaii. Turner played in nine games for Hawaii in 2020, and he didn’t disappoint the Hawaii fans. Calvin did everything for the Rainbow Warriors.

Turner was a running back, receiver, and kick returner this past season. Calvin had 1,201 all-purpose yards and 11 touchdowns in nine games. In the New Mexico Bowl, Turner was the game’s outstanding offensive player for his all-purpose accolades. Calvin accumulated 252 all-purpose yards. Calvin did it three ways, running the ball for 60 yards, catching the ball for 88 yards, and returning the ball for 104 yards. Turner scored two touchdowns. At Jacksonville, he was the quarterback, but at Hawaii University, as you can see, he could do more as an athlete.

After this season, Calvin was eligible to graduate and move on. The word was that Turner would look at leaving and enter the NFL draft. Calvin announced that he would remain at Hawaii University after considering entering his name in the 2021 NFL Draft on social media last week. Due to the Covid-19 Pandemic, the NCAA granted all athletes one more year of eligibility, which gave Turner a choice to stay more one season. The Rainbow Warrior fans got them an added bonus for next season.

Note: Calvin was a 2017 graduate of New Hampstead High School. In 2017 Turner was the 64th annual Ashley Dearing Award, given to the most versatile male high school athlete in Savannah who played varsity football, varsity basketball, and a spring sport. Turner was named the GHSA Region 3A Football Player of the Year after rushing for 1,763 yards and 15 touchdowns and passing for 1,450 yards and ten more scores as a senior. On the basketball court, he was a two-time GHSA Region 3A all-region basketball player. Calvin claimed the GHSA regional titles in the 110 hurdles and the long jump as a track athlete.
