Where are they now? Savannah’s Carter Holton & Jarrett Brown play key roles for NCAA Baseball Regional teams Vanderbilt, Georgia Southern

A pair of Savannah natives from two of the city’s top-notch private school baseball programs are heading to the NCAA Regionals this weekend for the first portion of the Division I postseason schedule culminating in Omaha at the College World Series.

Georgia Southern’s sophomore infielder Jarrett Brown, a Savannah Christian product, has had a solid second campaign for the Eagles, playing second base and batting near the middle of head coach Rodney Hennon’s potent lineup in Statesboro. Benedictine graduate Carter Holton has been one of the best true freshman pitchers in the country while starting 14 games this season for the Vanderbilt Commodores.

Each player figures to play an important role in his team’s attempt to advance out of the regional round (four teams per region) and into the Super Regionals.

Holton has already made Vanderbilt fans very grateful that he decided to forego the professional route last summer after being drafted by the Brewers in the 19th round of the MLB Draft. The left-hander has posted an 8-3 record with a 3.15 ERA while striking out 92 batters (second in the SEC) across 74.1 innings. Vandy has won 10 of his 14 starts this season and Holton was named to the All-SEC freshman first team for his work.

Over his last four games, the former Cadet star has turned it up another notch, just in time for the postseason run. In his four latest starts dating back to April 29, Holton has not allowed a run, is 4-0, with 23 strikeouts and 13 hits across 24 innings. He threw 98, 101, 113 and 105-pitches, respectively, in the four outings (104 pitches on average).

Brown, meanwhile, has been a dependable, productive mainstay as an everyday player for the Eagles. The former Raider standout is slashing .310avg/.395obp/.840ops in 56 games (53 starts) this season. He has four home runs and 36 runs batted in to go with five stolen bases. In 53 games played last season for Georgia Southern, Brown hit .247 with just one homer. His improvement has been a major reason for the success of Southern in a historical campaign for the program.

Georgia Southern (40-18) will host the Statesboro Regional at J.I. Clements Stadium as the No. 16 overall seed in the country. The Eagles are making their 14th all-time NCAA appearance and first since 2014. GS has never hosted an NCAA Regional. General admission for the tournament beginning on Friday was nearly sold out as of Tuesday afternoon.

A two-seed in the Corvallis Regional hosted at Oregon State, Vanderbilt (36-21) is joined by the top-seeded Beavers (44-15), 3-seed San Diego (36-18) and 4-seed New Mexico State (24-32).

GS is one of four Sun Belt Conference teams in the 64-team regional field (Louisiana, Texas State, Coastal Carolina). Holton’s Commodores are one of nine Southeastern Conference teams (Arkansas, Auburn, Florida, Georgia, LSU, Ole Miss, Tennessee and Texas A&M) playing in an NCAA regional this weekend.

Vandy begins play in the double-elimination regional on Friday at 4 p.m. ET against San Diego. Holton is the likely starter for Vanderbilt in Game 1. Georgia Southern plays at 7 p.m. ET Friday night versus UNCG and the game will be streamed on ESPN+.
