Benedictine's Gavin Stewart Grabs the 67th Ashley Dearing Award

Yesterday, the longest running Savannah, Georgia prep sports award was announced during this COVID19 Pandemic. Benedictine’s senior Gavin Stewart grabbed the 67th Ashley Dearing Award which goes to the most versatile male athlete who played varsity football, varsity basketball, and a varsity spring sport during the 2019-2020 school year.  Local athletic directors and local news media votes on the award to decide the winner. To round out the rest of the top five was, Benedictine’s Trent Broadnax who finished second, New Hampstead’s Sam Brown was third and Calvary Day’s Thomas Carver and AE Beach’s Jaylen Wells tied for fourth.

Gavin played football, basketball, and soccer during his four years at Benedictine. Stewart never left the gridiron as he played safety on defense, wide receiver on offense, and was the place kicker. Gavin hauled in 27 catches from the wide receiver position for 500 yards and scored nine touchdowns. On the defense side of the ball, he had 47 tackles and 9 interceptions. As a kicker, Gavin was perfect whether kicking field goals or extra points. Stewart connected on 9 for 9 field goals with a long of 47 yards and made every one of his 55 attempts on extra-points. He led the Savannah area in most points scored in football this season with 137.

In basketball Gavin averaged 5 points per game, 4 rebounds per game, and 4.5 steals per game this season. Stewart was the captain this year and prided his game on defense.

In the Coastal Empire, Stewart is one of the best in the sport of high school soccer. Before the state cut the 2020 soccer season short. Gavin had five goals, three assists and 20 shots. For his career Stewart played in 70 games, had 43 assists, assists 43, finished with 91 goals falling nine goals short of the coveted 100 goals scored club in prep soccer. Gavin joins his brother Brad Stewart as the second set of brothers to win the Ashley Dearing Award. Gavin will take his talents as preferred walk-on to play football at Georgia Tech.
