Summer workouts for high school players usually mean organized training sessions, practices, summer league games, seven versus seven football dates, and team camps during the summer break. These workouts aim to help players get in better shape, improve their skills, and prepare for the upcoming sports season.
This is the last week of summer workouts before the second Georgia High School Association dead week. What is the GHSA dead week? GHSA rules say that there are two periods where teams are prohibited from contact between coaches and student-athletes to help ensure that there is "downtime" for both the players and coaches.
Now there are two periods where athletes and coaches get a break from workouts during the summer break. The first period is the Sunday after school ends till the following Sunday is called a GHSA "dead period or week." The traditional "dead week" has always been from the Sunday before the Fourth of July to the Sunday after. The GHSA says that school teams are not allowed to do conditioning drills, exercise, or compete on or off campus during this time.
Furthermore, let's get the games in before the seconded GHSA dead week. The basketballs will hit the hardwood all day and all night at HV Jenkins High School today and tomorrow. HV Jenkins girls start today at 9 am and go until at least 8 pm. The boy's basketball program play day will run from 10 am to 7 pm.
The Lady Warriors have been hosting the 2nd annual "Above the Rim" girls' summer league this year and it has been every Tuesday at Jenkins running all day. Lady Warriors head coach Brianna Booker started the summer league last year and has seen a big turnaround for her players and local coaches wanting to be involved.
Booker told the PSR, "The girl's summer league used to be prominent in Savannah, so my coaches and I wanted to bring it back to keep our girls active. Also, the local Savannah coaches have been very supportive. To accommodated we have run games all day long and today is no different. It's been successful, and I appreciate all the support."
The Warriors boy's program has been on the road most of the summer and will host their play date tomorrow, June 28, 2023, with "The Malace in the Palace."
The PSR asked HV Jenkins head boys coach Terry Hines what summer workouts and a big play day like this mean to his program. He stated, " Summer workouts mean everything. It allows us to show and give our guys a chance to work on fundamental skills and bond as a team." Not only the players benefit from the workouts and playing summer games so does the coaching staff. Hines feels it helps the coaching staff. He said, "It gives the coaches an understanding of what type of team they have and it helps with planning and for the coaches and players to gather our system that will be functional for our program during the upcominf season."
There will be over 20 boys and girls teams participating. So, if you need your basketball fix in June, you must get to the Palace on Derenne today, June 27, 2023, and June 28, 2023! Below are the schedules for these dates.
