When Beach quarterback Jayvion Williams passes to Kejuan Ferguson, he’s not just confident his teammate will catch it.
“He’s always going to get it,” Williams said. “I trust him 100 percent.”
So Williams will throw to Ferguson again and again and again.
Like in the Bulldogs’ road game against the Windsor Forest Knights on Friday night at Savannah High School. Their first attempt was actually an incomplete pass, expertly broken up by cornerback Kamari Duncan on the first drive of the opening quarter.
Williams finished the 68-yard drive with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Ferguson on the junior QB’s second throw of the game. It was a harbinger of the Bulldogs’ scoring formula.
Ferguson caught touchdown passes of 66 and 35 yards on Williams’ next two targets -- for three TDs on three attempts -- as Beach never trailed in a 49-18 victory in Region 3-3A action.
Williams finished 7 of 9 for 223 yards, four TD passes, and one interception, and he also rushed seven times for 103 yards and scores of 60 and 4 yards in accounting for six touchdowns.
Ferguson, a senior, made five receptions for 138 yards and the three TDs. He became the Bulldogs’ go-to runner on their final possession and totaled six carries for 30 yards. He also intercepted a pass on defense, showing versatility and sure hands.
“We were going to take advantage of what Windsor Forest gave us,” said Beach head coach Michael Thompson, noting that Williams had some designed running plays and also “some he made happen with his feet” when scrambling.
One designed play was the only score of the third quarter for Beach, which led 27-11 at halftime. Williams faked a handoff to receiver Willie Mayes coming left-to-right across the line in what appeared to be the start of a jet sweep. The QB went around the left side behind blocking from the pulling right tackle and guard.
Williams got to the left sideline and refused to be pushed out of bounds, outsprinting the defense for a 60-yard score and a 34-11 lead with 7:10 remaining in the third quarter.
“I had to score,” Williams said. “I had no other option.”
Big plays were the name of this game, as Williams also connected with tight end Dakari Smith, who got behind the defense for a 67-yard touchdown catch with 10:24 remaining in regulation for a 41-18 advantage.
Jordan Newton ran 33 yards for a second-quarter TD, and Williams recorded the shortest score of the night with a 4-yard run on the Bulldogs’ final offensive possession of the game. He took a low snap and found a seam to the end zone. On the extra-point attempt, kicker Angel Gonzalez (five PATs) never had a chance because of a high snap. No problem, as Williams, as the holder, snagged it and ran in for two points.
Williams was also involved with two points for the Knights when he was sacked in the end zone by linebacker Ja’shawn Green. It was part of a big second-quarter response from Windsor Forest to stay in the game.
The Knights had helped out on the Bulldogs’ opening drive with automatic first-down penalties for a late hit and grabbing a facemask, but they still trailed only 7-0 going into the second quarter.
Williams connected with Ferguson on a 66-yard bomb on the third play of the second quarter for 14-0.
On the next possession, Windsor Forest quarterback Jr Rowland launched a deep pass to Jayden Thomas, who bobbled the ball while covered by a defender before securing it and simultaneously avoiding a tackle and the left boundary. Thomas raced the rest of the way for a 58-yard addition to his highlight reel.
Even better for the Knights, the Bulldogs let the ensuing kickoff go untouched into the end zone, except it didn’t. The ball stopped on the 2 before Beach covered it.
On the next play, starting at his 2-yard line, Williams rolled left in the end zone, where Green found him for a safety and a 14-8 deficit with 8:55 remaining in the second quarter.
The Bulldogs punted to the Knights, who got nowhere and punted back. Beach scored on the next play on a short field when Williams found Ferguson again, open in the end zone after the defender slipped to the ground, for a 35-yard score.
A sequence of penalties on Windsor Forest (three) and Beach (one) motivated the Bulldogs to try a two-point conversion run, which failed, but they still led 20-8 with 7:19 to go in the second quarter.
Newton’s 33-yard run made it 27-8 with 34 seconds left, but Terrell Savage lifted the Knights’ spirits with an electric kickoff return. Lamont Frazier made a touchdown-saving tackle at the 3-yard line.
Von Griffith booted a 22-yard field goal on the final play of the half. He also caught a 15-yard TD from Rowland in the third quarter after teammate Andrew Mitchell’s interception.
Rowland’s two touchdowns highlighted a tough night when he was 13 of 27 for 168 yards, one interception, and was sacked six times.
Beach’s Thompson said that defensive coordinator Matthew Hawthorne did a great job, as they watched a lot of film and knew Rowland wanted to move around in the pocket to make plays. The sophomore, a transfer from Thompson’s alma mater, Memorial Day School, didn’t have much room.
“I didn’t know how this game was going to go,” said Thompson, whose Bulldogs improved to 1-1 overall, 1-1 in the region, after not having played since Aug. 16. “Windsor Forest showed some good things and exploited some of our weaknesses.
“(The Knights) played hard. They never gave up,” he added.
Windsor Forest (1-2, 0-2) won its season opener under second-year head coach C.J. Frazier, who stepped down for “personal reasons,” per an announcement from the Savannah-Chatham County Public School System, and didn’t coach its second game.
Athletic director Cam Turner is serving as the head coach for the remainder of the season, with defensive coordinator Maurice Mack and offensive coordinator Zane Rowland (Jr’s father) stepping up in their responsibilities, Turner said when the announcement was made on Tuesday.
