SAVANNAH, Ga. — What began as a simple idea to get local soccer players more exposure has turned into one of the most anticipated high school soccer events in Southeast Georgia. This Saturday,  May 24, the 15th Annual Coastal Empire All-Star Games kick off at Islands High School, featuring over 100 of the region's top high school soccer players — and the man behind it all, Windsor Forest High School Athletic Director/Head Boys Soccer Coach Cam Turner, couldn't be more proud.

"We've had over 100 girls and 130 boys nominated this year," said Turner, who founded the event 15 years ago. "The growth of soccer in Southeast Georgia is continuing to amaze people, and the love of the game is clearly thriving."

A Showcase of Talent

The day is split into two thrilling sessions:

  • Girls All-Star Games: 10:00 AM – 1:00 PM
  • Boys All-Star Games: 1:00 PM – 5:30 PM

The games feature three girls' teams and four boys' teams competing in a round-robin format. MVPs will be selected from both groups, and the top squads will earn first-place medals — all in front of fans, families, and college coaches.

"This year we've had 20 college coaches already contact me," Turner explained. "Georgia Southern and SCAD men's and women's teams are expected to attend with other schools, and we're also streaming the games so over 60 colleges can watch and recruit these players."

Behind the Scenes: How Players Are Chosen

Player selection is no popularity contest. Coaches across the region nominate athletes from their teams, and Turner and a small group of evaluators attend games to scout players firsthand.

"We get feedback from other coaches and then do our own evaluations," Turner said. "It's a thorough process because we want to make sure the best talent is represented."

Building a Recruiting Pipeline

In its 15-year history, the Coastal Empire All-Star Games have helped more than 100 student-athletes land college opportunities. Turner credits that success to the event's consistent visibility and the relationships it has built with college programs.

"Every year, a dozen or more kids start the recruiting process because of what they show here," said Turner.

A Community Effort

As the event has grown, so have the logistics. Turner noted that fundraising efforts raised over $4,000 this year to cover costs, helping shift the operation from a volunteer-led showcase into a professional-grade event.

"There's been a real shift — it's starting to feel more like a business than a small side project," he said. "But it's worth it to give these kids a chance."

Beyond the Game

This year's event will also feature Prime Sports, an organization that connects athletes with next-level opportunities—not just as players but also as referees, coaches, and professionals in the sport.

"This isn't just about one day," said Turner. "It's about building futures in soccer, whether on the field or beyond."

A Dream Realized

Fifteen years ago, Turner launched the Coastal Empire All-Star Games, believing that local clubs weren't doing enough to help student-athletes get recruited. What started as a solution has become a tradition—and a beacon for Southeast Georgia soccer.

"This is truly a dream come true," Turner said. "So many kids have gotten opportunities they never would have had without this game."

Don't miss the action this Saturday at Islands High School. Come celebrate 15 years of soccer excellence — and see the game's future here in Savannah.
