The high school basketball season gets an early jump this week — complete with a playoff-style atmosphere — as the Joe Greene Tip-Off Tournament opens play at Beach High School. Now in its 48th year, the two-day event brings together boys’ and girls’ teams from Savannah and across Georgia for a tournament fell to start to the Thanksgiving Holiday week.
Savannah area schools—Beach, Bradwell, Effingham, Groves, Johnson, New Hampstead, Savannah High, South Effingham, and Windsor Forest—headline the field, joined by teams from Douglas and Dougherty counties.
The tournament is named for Joe Greene, a longtime Beach High coach and educator who became one of the most important figures in Savannah high school basketball. Greene spent decades guiding boys’ and girls’ teams and building the Beach program into a local tradition. The event honors the impact he made on generations of athletes.
For teams, the tournament serves as a chance to get real game action after weeks of practice and early preseason games. Here’s how Monday’s action lines up as the Joe Greene Tournament tips off at Beach High School.
