Georgia Coastal Aquatic Team (GCAT) swimmer Sonny Shannon treaded a lot of water at The USA Swimming Southern Zone Championships. Shannon in the 11-12 division had 10 top 10 places in the zone championships, not counting relays. Shannon made the podium six times as he finished in six out of ten events in the top eight.
Every year in the summer, the Southern Zone Championships are held. The 2023 championships were in Knoxville, Tennessee, and the 2024 championships will be in Midland, Texas. GCAT head coach Bill Forrester stated more than 1,000 swimmers compete in more than 400 events.
"Shannon did a great job at the zones. He has worked hard, and he is getting the results from his dedication," said Forrester. "He is also emerging as a leader in the GCAT program. I couldn't be prouder."
The USA Swimming Southern Zone Championships is a swim meet for swimmers in the Southern Zone of USA Swimming who are in their age groups or older. In Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, North Texas, South Carolina, South Texas, Southeastern Tennessee, and West Virginia, there are 15 Local Swim Committees (LSCs).
