The first round of the President's Day Classic at Bacon Park Golf Course was played on Valentine's Day, and it was a sweet day for Savannah's Maya Lilja-Vazquez.
Lilja-Vazquez, a sophomore at Savannah Arts Academy, posted a score of 4-under par 67 and leads Port Wentworth's Hayden Price by seven strokes entering the second round on February 15. The 54-hole tournament, a Savannah Junior Golf Association even presented by First Tee-Savannah, will conclude on February 16 for the older age divisions earning World Amateur Golf Rankings points.
Lilja-Vazquez's round inlcluded an eagle and three birdies with only one bogey. She and Price will play together in the second round starting at 10 am on February 15.
In the Boys 54-hole tournament, Shim Wang from Winter Garden, Florida, carded a score of 1-under 70 and leads Brian Li from Waban, Massachusetts, but two strokes and Savannah's Morris Lane, a St. Andrew's School senior, by 3 strokes.
In the Boys 8-13 age group, Pooler's Sajan Patel and Savannah's Will Parker are tied for the lead after the first round. Parker, 8, had the highlight of the day with an ace on the 14th hole with a 6-iron from 107 yards.
In the Girls 8-13 age group, Richmond Hill's Victoria Grant has a big lead over Savannah's Emma Parker after an opening round score of 84.
