With Week 5 of Georgia high school baseball underway, CoachesBox.com presents the latest Coaches Box Poll and highlights Savannah-area teams.
As region play starts to take shape, the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) area teams are getting noticed.
A total of 5 schools from the Coastal Empire and surrounding areas are included in the latest rankings.
Benedictine Ranked in Class 4A
The Cadets are ranked No. 5 in Class 4A in the state.
Benedictine's early-season resume showcases them as one of the area's most reliable programs. Their balanced pitching and hitting provide a lasting formula for success in region play.
If the Cadets continue, they'll be a team to watch as the playoffs near.
Effingham County Leads Coastal Teams in Class 5A
In Class 5A, the latest poll has Effingham County ranked No. 6.
The Rebels remain one of the area's most consistent and competitive teams against top state opponents.
Two other Coastal programs are also in the Top 10.
Effingham's Region 1 has the most area schools in the top ten that the Rebels will face. Brunswick is ranked 7, Glynn Academy is 10. The Southeast features three teams in the top 10.
In addition, Savannah Christian is ranked in the GHSA 3A-1A Private School Poll.
The Raiders are No. 5 in the Private School Coaches Poll.
The Raiders are a top private-school program in the area, along with defending state champion Calvary, which received votes but has not cracked the top 10.
Looking ahead, here is an early-season Prep Sports Report outlook.
Coaches in our area enjoy the recognition from the March rankings, but the main goal has not yet been achieved.
They're focused on weekly improvement, winning region games, and preparing for the playoffs.
Still, the early rankings show one thing clearly:
Savannah-area baseball continues to prove local teams can compete with Georgia's elite.
As the season progresses, some teams will compete in the state playoffs in May to show the coastal empire has talent to win it all.
