As of February 3, the boys' and girls' basketball teams at Savannah Area High School are approaching the end of the regular season. With the regional tournament for most teams next week, teams are vying for better seeds and even the number one spot. Will the current standings remain unchanged, or will we see some shake-ups? We'll find out this week as the PSR breaks down the competition for the regular season region titles.

THE REGION RACES

There is a three-way tie in boys GHSA Class 5A—Region 1 between Bradwell (4-1), Brunswick (4-1), and Statesboro (4-1). This week, all three teams will play each other to determine who finishes first: Tuesday it is Statesboro at Bradwell and then the Blue Devils on Thursday are at Brunswick. Then, on Saturday, Bradwell hosts Brunswick.

Benedictine (6-2) is currently tied with Ware County (8-2) and Warner Robins (6-2) in GHSA Class 4A—Region 1. To finish first in the regular season, the Cadets need to secure a victory on the road today against Perry, followed by a win against Warner Robins on Wednesday at home, to be the number one seed. Tiebreakers may come into play to determine the regualr season champion.

In GHSA Class A—D2—Region 3, Savannah High is one game back of region leader McIntosh County Academy, which beat Savannah High by 1 point, 48-47, on January 7, 2025, at McIntosh. The rematch is tomorrow, Tuesday, January 4, at the Hyde tipoff at 7:30. Both teams will have two games left after they face off against each other. Savannah High wins and wins out. McIntosh County wins and will go to a tiebreaker to determine the number 1 spot before the region tournament.

In GIAA AAAA/AAA District 2, St. Andrew's has a two-game lead over Bulloch Academy with three games left. On Tuesday, February 4, St. Andrew's will host Frederica Academy and back-to-back games against Bulloch Academy. The Lions are at the Gators on February 5 and will host them on February 7.

Then, the Bethesda Academy Blazers (8-1) are tied with Thomas Heyward   (7-1) in SCISA 2A Region 3 with one loss each. The teams split during the regular season: Thomas Heyward one on January 10, 63-57, and Bethesda one on January 28, 55-38. Both teams have four games left with two weeks left in the season. If both teams win all four, we'll go to the tiebreaker.

On the girls' side of the region standings, in GHSA Class 6A—Region 1, Richmond Hill (6-2) is one game behind Lowndes High School (6-1). The Lady Wildcats have two games remaining this week, and they are against the Lady Vikings, whom they will host tomorrow night and Friday at Lowndes. Lowndes will have one game remaining, hosting Camden County on Saturday, February 8. Camden is right there with these two teams. Camden and Richmond Hill have split, while Lowndes defeated Camden on January 17, 2025, 54-35.

In GHSA Class 6A—Region 1, Bradwell (6-0) and Evans (7-0) are undefeated in their respective subregions and have not faced each other because of this. Both teams are number one in each subregion and will move on to the semifinals of the region tournament. The higher-seeded teams will host early-round games, and the region tournament semifinals and finals will occur at Statesboro High School.

Calvary Day (9-0) girls are undefeated in GHSA Class 3A—Region 3 and have a one-game lead over Liberty County (8-1). The Lady Cavaliers have one game left against Jenkins. If Calvary Day wins, it will host the region tournament.

Vidalia (10-0) is currently ahead of Savannah Country Day (6-1) in GHSA Class A - D1 Region 3 by just one game. On December 10, 2024, Vidalia won a close game against the Lady Hornets, 42-39. Tonight, they will play each other again at Vidalia. For Country Day, winning is important because they have three more games this week. They must win all these games to have a chance at the top seed. The girls' team that finishes first will get to host the region tournament.
