Several area schools and golfers in contention at GHSA state championships

It's no surprise Savannah Christian's girls' golf team is winning the Class AAA state tournament, but two-time defending state champion Mary Miller is surprisingly trailing teammate Ava Cottis at the top of the leaderboard.

After a first-round score of 1-under par 71 at the LaFayette Municipal Golf Cours in LaFayette, Ga., Cottis has a three-stroke lead over Miller, and the Red Raiders have a 13-stroke lead over Dawson County High School headed into Tuesday's final round.

Cottis and Miler are among a large cotingent of local high school golfers competing in state championships:

In the Class AAAA boys' tounament being played at Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Ga., Benedictine is in third place and only six strokes behind The Lovett School. The Cadets were led by freshman Jack Weeks, who is T4 and three strokes behind the tournament's lader after a first round score of 5-over par 77 on a very difficult golf course.

In the Class AAA boys' championship being played at LaFayette Municipal Golf Course, Savannah Country Day's William Whitfield is in third place after an opening round score of Even-par 72 and Calvary Day School's Braylon Royal is T7 after a score of 2-over 74. As a team, the Savannah Country Day is in second place but trails Wesleyan by 12 strokes.

In the Class AAAAAAA girls' tournament being played at Sunset Hills Country Club in Carrolton, Ga., Richmond Hill's Alexa Mohler is T6 after a first round score of 3-over par 75. And in the Class AAAAAAA boys' tournament at Sunset Hills Country Club.

State championship tournaments will conclude on Tuesday for every classification.
