Three local high school sailors received the 16th annual Robert H Demere Scholarship at the Savannah Yacht Club in May 2022. The recipients were Grace Winters, a St. Vincent's Academy junior, and two  from Benedictine Military School, senior George McVay and junior Garner Mobley. The scholarship started in 2005.

With this scholarship, the three Savannah sailors are in Charleston at the Ocean Sailing Academy this week, participating in sailing and power boating courses, according to SYC sailing director Adam Young. At the end of the week, all sailors will receive a keelboat certification and a power boaters license that will be good in all 50 states and international waters.

This scholarship is in honor of the late Robert Demere, a philanthropist whose family business was Colonial Oil but whose passion was sailing and known as a top ocean sailing racer from Savannah. Each year, candidates are nominated from the Savannah area who are local prep sailors. The scholarship board is comprised of SYC members who choose the scholarship winners.
