This Lady Mustang can play softball and she has the credentials to do prove it. South Effingham High School senior Alex Brown, has been an all-region player and Savannah Morning news first team softball player all three years of her high school career. Brown stepped into the starting lineup as a freshman. Alex has been the Mustangs leadoff hitter and played shortstop most of her entire career. In track, Alex has been a region medalist and a state qualifier in the 100 meter, 200 meter events, and the high jump.

A dedicated fast-pitch softball player. Playing travel ball and high school ball has paid off right before the covid-19 pandemic shut down high school sports. Alex, a junior still waiting to play her senior year, received big time NCAA Division 1 offers from North Carolina, South Carolina and Georgia Tech. Alex verbally committed to play softball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

Alex has been around baseball her whole life. “I got my start in softball because of my dad, uncles, cousins, and my brother all played baseball. So, it surrounded me at a very young age,’’ said Brown. To note, her dad, Kevin Brown, was a standout baseball player at Glynn Academy, Middle Georgia College, and then at Armstrong State. He also was the athletic director and head baseball coach at Groves for over twenty years before he became the athletic director at Woodville Tompkins.

As far as the most influential person in Brown’s athletic career is her brother, K.C. Brown.  Alex said, “K.C.  inspired me to always work harder and get better.” Just a side note. K.C. Brown was an exceptional baseball player, also for South Effingham High School. KC then played baseball at South Georgia College and just finished up at Georgia College.

K.C.’s senior year was over earlier than it should have been because of the covid-19 pandemic. At this point, K.C. had a batting average of, .400, hit three homeruns, and had 21 RBI in 15 games. K.C. was one of 10 Georgia College basbeall players named to the Peach Belt Conference's all-academic team.

Alex’s final season so far does not differ from her first three. This season in 5 games, Alex is 8 for 18 at the plate with a.444 batting average, has scored 5 times, hit 1 triple, hit 2 homeruns, has 7 RBI, and has 3 stolen bases. Last year, defensively, she made only three errors in 31 games. This season she is perfect with her glove and has committed no errors.

Brown memtioned her proudest athletic achievement in her high school career so far has been three occasions.  Alex said, “When I verbally committed to play softball at the University of North Carolina and competing in the state championship with my teammates in both softball and track.”  Alex still has the rest of the year to do this again.  With her future set playing softball at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. You can bet Alex can now concentrate on making another trip to the state championships in softball and track. Go get'em Alex!
