Savannah high school football fans know that the city has produced a lot of college wide receivers over the last five to six years. Across the country, and at nearly every level of NCAA football, receivers from Savannah area high schools are making a name for themselves on Saturdays.
One of the most athletic and exciting receivers in that category is Tyrone Scott. The 2017 graduate of Jenkins High School was a walking highlight reel in his time as a Warrior and he has started his redshirt-junior season at Missouri State in incredible fashion.
Scott played originally at Central Michigan University after graduating from Jenkins. He was a three-star receiver according to most recruiting websites before being redshirted in 2018. In 2019 as a RS-Freshman, he caught 37 balls for 650 yards and five touchdowns for CMU. He decided to transfer to Missouri State following the 2020 season and is now in his second year playing for the Bears, who rank between No. 3 and No. 6 nationally in the FCS, according to most polls.
His 2021 debut season for the Bears was a historic one and he was named to the All-MVC first team offense. Scott set new school records for receptions in a season (66), receiving yards (1,110) and receiving touchdowns (eight). He also had six 100+ yard receiving games, another school record in a single season.
Through the first two games of the 2022 season, the Estill, South Carolina native has picked up right where he left off in 2021.
Heading into this weekend’s game at No. 10 Arkansas, Scott ranks third nationally (FCS) in receiving touchdowns (three) and sixth in catches per game (eight) and receiving yards per game (128). He is eighth in total receiving yards (256) and leads the Missouri Valley Conference in receptions and receiving yards per game. Last week in his team’s win over UT-Martin, Scott had eight catches for 98 yards and three touchdowns.
With 1,366 career receiving yards already (14 games) and likely another full season left at Missouri State after this year, Scott is just 855 yards away from becoming the school’s all-time leader in terms of career receiving yards. His 11 touchdown catches are No. 11 in school history, seven short of the No. 1 spot set back in 1977-1980.
Scott and the Bears (2-0) play at No. 10 Arkansas (2-0) on Saturday, September 17 at 7 p.m. ET on ESPN+ and SEC Network+.
