History was made December 9, 2020, at Calvary Day School and on the road for Richmond Hill High School. The Lady Cavaliers won both first and second round Georgia High School State Association games on the same night in the inaugural GHSA Girls Flag Football State Playoffs. With the two wins, the Lady Cavaliers moved onto the Elite Eight round at home this Saturday, December 19, against Harris County at 1 pm.
The Lady Wildcats took to the road twice and were victorious. The first-round game was at Union Grove High School on Wednesday night, December 9. The Lady Wildcats shutout Union Grove 12-0. Then on Tuesday, December 15th, again away from the Hill. The Lady Wildcats won in a dramatic fashion 8-6. The highlights are below. Richmond Hill now moves onto the Elite Eight round, kicking off at 5:30 tomorrow Friday night at Northside Columbus. Just a side note. The GHSA has two classifications in Flag Football, and they are 6A/7A and Class A/5A. Both Calvary and Richmond Hill are in the Class A/5A.
The FINAL SCORES:
First Round
Calvary Day 19, Stockbridge 6
Highlights: Calvary Running Back Mahkayla Premo did it all in the first-round game. Premo scored two touchdowns and tossed another back to quarterback Hannah Cail. The Lady Cavalier defense gave Stockbridge a tough time all game.
Richmond Hill 12, Union Grove 0
Highlights: The Lady Wildcats shutout the Wolverines 12-0. The first score came on a pick-six interception by Madeline Ward. The second score was Kayla Jackson on a short pass from Lucy Tuttle. That made the final score 12-0. Richmond Hill moved onto the sweet sixteen against Kendrick High School out of Columbus, Georgia.
Second Round
Calvary Day School 9, Carver High School, Columbus 0
Highlights: The stingy Lady Cavalier defense got on the scoreboard first with safety that gave Calvary a 2-0 lead. This score stood up until late in the game when Emma Crosby playing on the offensive line (every player is eligible to run or catch the ball), caught a 5-yard toss from quarterback Hannah Cail. Then Makayla Premo caught the point after a try from a toss from Cail to running back Hamilton, who passed it to Premo for the point after. This made the score 9-0 Calvary, and which was the outcome.
Richmond Hill High School 8, Kendrick High School 6
Highlights: The Lady Wildcats had to come from behind to beat Kendrick High School 8-6. Richmond Hill was trailing at halftime 6-0. In flag football, they play two 20 minute halves. Lucy Tootle connected with Kayla Jackson on a pass to tie the game 6-6. The Wildcats point-after try to go ahead failed.
With 19 seconds to go in the game, the Wildcat defense pressured Kendrick High School's quarterback. As the quarterback was dropping back to pass, she fell in the end zone for a safety. This would give the Lady Wildcats two points for an 8-6 lead and the win to move onto the Elite Eight.
If either team wins, they will play on Wednesday, December 23 at 1:30 pm, in the GHSA Flag Football semi-finals. The semi-finals will be held at the Home Depot Mercedes-Benz complex. This is located outside right behind the stadium.
