Five Savannah area tennis teams punched their ticket to the Georgia High School Association "Elite 8" round. Benedictine, Savannah Country Day, Savannah Christian, and St. Vincent's tennis teams were all winners on April 25. Here are the results.
The boys of Savannah Country Day (19-2) defeated Upson-Lee 5-0 in the Georgia High School Association Class 3A Sweet Sixteen to move on to the Elite 8 round.
#1 Henry Berg (6-0,6-0), #2 Jake Felser (6-1,6-2), and #3 Nico Dascombe (6-2,6-2) swept singles matches. The doubles teams of #1 Lawson Zhou and Paxton Towe won 6-0,6-0, and the Hornets #2 team of Wills Davis and Finn Taylor won 6-1,6-2.
SCDS will host Hebron Christian in the GHSA Elite 8 at a day and time to be determined.
The Savanah Christian boys team defeated Mary Parsons 3-0 to move and will travel to Oconee Co for a GHSA Elite 8 matchup on May 2.
In GHSA Class 4A Benedictine (13-5) swept Perry 5-0 to continue in the GHSA tennis playoffs. BC winners were Liam Hegarty, 6-0, 6-0; Pace Gustinella, 6-0, 6-0; Walker Sheffield, 6-1, 6-2; Graydon Gustinella/Josh Sussman, 6-1, 6-2; and Matthew Winders/Sidh Patel, 6-4, 6-2.
Class 4A Islands lost to West Laurens 3-1, Class 6A Effingham lost to Marist, and Class 7A Richmond Hill lost 3-0 to Harrison for their seasons to end.
Class 3A Girls
The St. Vincent's Academy Saints (9-5) beat the Mary Persons Bulldogs in tennis to move on to the Elite 8. They won by a score of 3-0. Bridget Mainor and Emma Stroop won the singles. Grace Mahfet and Lisa DeMott won their match in doubles. Their next match will be on April 27 in Watkinsville against Oconee County.
SCDS (19-2) girls defeated Thomasville 3-0. The number one singles Claudia Birthsel won 6-1,6-1 as well as the top two doubles teams of #1 Doubles Skye Horn/Helen Culver 6-0,6-0 and #2 Doubles Lila Brennen/Mary Duvall Sumner 6-0,6-0.
The #2 singles player Allysa Young, and #3, Eliza Strong, were leading when the doubles team completed their matches, so they still did not finish their respective games. SCDS will host Hebron Christian in the GHSA Elite 8 at a day and time to be determined.
In Class 6A, Effingham girls lost to Marist.
