Benedictine graduate and Guyton native Carter Holton showed why he is considered one of the best collegiate pitchers in the world while playing for the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team at the 2022 Honkbalweek Haarlem in the Netherlands this week. Holton earned the win for Team USA in the event’s finale game versus Japan on Friday, July 15 (USA won 5-1), going two ⅓ innings while striking out three without allowing a hit.

He needed just 38 pitches to get seven outs and he struck out the side in the fifth, his final inning on the bump.

Team USA finished with a 4-3 record at Honkbalweek Haarlem, an event featuring collegiate national teams from around the world. Holton and the Americans earned a bronze medal for their performance.

Holton, who was recently named a freshman All-American for his outstanding season on the mound for Vanderbilt, entered Friday’s game against Japan with the bases loaded in the third inning before getting his team out of the jam with no damage done.

Including scrimagges and games for Team USA, Holton threw seven ⅔ innings without allowing a run. He struck out seven, walked three and scattered five hits.

As a freshman for coach Tim Corbin’s team at Vanderbilt this year, Holton was 8-4 with a 3.14 ERA in 15 starts. He struck out 97 batters in 80 innings and was first team Freshman All-SEC selection.
