South Effingham had an impressive week on the diamond, highlighted by a junior pitcher who excelled both on the mound and at the plate. Cheniyah Jackson led the way with outstanding two-way play, earning her the John Carr Seaport Real Estate/Prep Sports Report Softball Player of the Week honor for September 16–21.
Jackson was outstanding both in the pitching circle and at the plate. Over 10 innings pitched, she picked up two wins, allowing just three hits and one run while striking out six. She backed it up offensively by going 5-for-8 at the plate with four RBIs and a double, helping the Mustangs to a big region sweep.
“Cheniyah contributed to a South region sweep in both the circle and at the plate,” said South Effingham head coach Adam Newland. “She’s become a valued member of the team not only for her on-field contributions, but also for her contribution to our overall team culture.”
Honorable Mentions
While Jackson earns top honors this week, several other local athletes delivered performances worth recognizing.
Sydney Minshall – South Effingham – Sophomore
Minshall continues to spark the Mustangs’ offense, going 6-for-8 with seven runs scored, two doubles, a triple, and three walks. “Her energy and enthusiasm for the game are infectious,” Coach Newland said. “Her teammates feed off her relentless energy.”
Alyssa Martin – South Effingham – Junior
Martin had a powerful week at the plate, going 5-for-9 with two home runs and six RBIs. Her leadership on and off the field is a key part of the team’s culture. “She backs up her words with action,” said Newland.
Justine Nevels – South Effingham – Junior
Nevels went 5-for-9 with two home runs, a triple, five runs scored, and four RBIs. “A quiet leader, Justine can always be counted on for outstanding effort,” said her coach.
Maggie Jenkins – Richmond Hill – Senior
Jenkins came through in the clutch with two go-ahead home runs, including the only run in a 1-0 win during a key region sweep over Lowndes. “She stepped up with two big swings,” said Coach Chris Jenkins.
Adriana Williams – Richmond Hill – Senior
Williams tossed back-to-back shutouts in 1-0 and 3-0 region victories against Lowndes. “She shut the door on a very good team—twice,” said Coach Jenkins.
