Savannah's Chad Chadwell, a rising senior at Benedictine Military School, carded scores of 68-72 and then survived a two-hole sudden death playoff to win the Boys 16-19 age group at the SJGT Sea Palms Junior Classic played June 2-3 at Sea Palms Resort on St. Simon's Island, Ga.
Chadwell was in the playoff with Savannah's Braden Schnaible, who was the first-round leader after an incredible score of 6-under 65, and eventual runner up Grady Kelley from Augusta, Ga. Schnaible made bogey on the first playoff hole while Chadwell and Kelley made pars, and Chadwell two-putted for par on the second playoff hole to secure the victory.
Chadwell was a rising star in junior golf before a serious back injury two years ago during his freshman year at Benedictine. He recovered in time to play one round in the Georgia High School Association Class AAAA state championship near the end of his sophomore year and has steadily been regaining the form that made him one of Georgia's top junior golfers.
During the second round, Chadwell was 3-under par through five holes before the wind started to blow on St. Simon's Island. Schnaible led by one stroke on the 18th hole in regulation before a bogey forced the playoff with Chadwell and Kelley.
Savannah Hamp Threlkeld, also a rising senior at Benedictine, posted scores of 73-74 to finish in solo 10th, Savannah's Jack Weeks, a rising junior at Benedictine, finished T15 after rounds of 73-76, and Pooler's Caden Hartley, a rising senior at Savannah Country Day School, was T19 after scores of 77-74.
