SIAC, Savannah State Athletics Announce Return to Play Plans For 2021
Savannah State winter and spring sports schedules forthcoming
ATLANTA, Ga. – The Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) announced this morning in a press release that it will seek to cautiously and prudently move forward with the 2021 winter and spring sports schedule.
Following the SIAC directive, Savannah State men’s and women’s basketball will begin their season on January 9, 2021.
The SIAC basketball season will feature a 12-14 game schedule that will culminate with the SIAC Basketball Championship Tournament, featuring all SIAC men and women teams, including the recently admitted provisional member Allen University.
The Savannah State spring season will see women’s tennis, men’s and women’s golf, men’s and women’s track and field, softball and baseball return to action after their seasons were cut short this year due to the global pandemic caused by the novel coronavirus COVID-19.
All Savannah State spring schedules are forthcoming. Once finalized, they will be released in chronological order, beginning with men’s and women’s basketball in the coming weeks. Both men’s and women’s basketball teams will only play conference teams during the 2021 season.
The SIAC will not sponsor championships for football, men’s and women’s cross country, and women’s volleyball for the remainder of the 2020-21 academic year. Individual institutions may participate in intercollegiate competition within these sports, according to the SIAC’s decision.
Savannah State football is currently in the planning stages for several scrimmages in the spring with other NCAA Division II programs. Savannah State volleyball is in the planning stages of a spring schedule that will include other SIAC teams.
At this juncture, fans will not be permitted at any sporting competition taking place on SIAC campuses, per the conference’s directive.
“In light of the fluid and dynamic nature of the current COVID-19 crisis, the SIAC will continue to work closely with its member institutions and continue to monitor and evaluate the health and safety risks, while also reserving the option to make scheduling adjustments should current circumstances change,” SIAC Commissioner Gregory Moore stated in the press release.
“I would also like to express appreciation of the efforts of Clark Atlanta Athletic Director Dr. Lin Dawson and his colleague SIAC ADs in connection with their efforts in crafting recommendations that were informed by the most recent NCAA COVID-19 Medical Advisory recommendations as well as updated state and local health official guidance.”
