Coach’s Corner Basketball Players of the Week: Calvary's Deng, St. Vincent's Whittle Do What Winners Do

At St. Vincent’s Academy, freshman guard Emily Whittle is already proving she belongs on the court.

Whittle had her best game of the season on February 10, against Savannah Christian, scoring 30 points with 10 rebounds and five steals. She has started almost every game this season and is already second on the team in scoring, rebounding, and steals.

St. Vincent’s head coach Jason Helton said her performance stands out — especially for a freshman.

“Scoring 30 points in a game is huge for any player but especially a freshman,” Helton said. “Emily has started in almost all of the games for St. Vincent’s this season and is second on the team in scoring, rebounding, and steals.”

Her confidence, effort, and ability to make plays have given the Saints a big lift this season.

Senior | Forward

Calvary Day senior forward Chol Kiir Chol Deng played a big role in the Cavaliers’ region championship win on February 14. In the title game, the 6-foot-8 senior dominated inside, scoring 10 points and grabbing 12 rebounds to lead Calvary Day.

During the region tournament, Deng averaged 8 points and 12 rebounds per game and led the Cavaliers with 3.7 assists. He did the dirty work every night — rebounding, battling bigger players, and helping his teammates succeed.

Calvary Day head coach Bob Martin said Deng’s impact goes beyond the stat sheet.

“Chol has done a great job doing all the dirty work for this team,” Martin said. “He rebounds, battles physical defenders, and is always encouraging his teammates.”

With his effort, toughness, and team-first mindset, Deng was a big part of Calvary Day winning the GHSA 3A-Region 3  title.
