The Tybee Island Maritime Academy middle school baseball team set a very high bar in its inaugural season.
In its first season of middle school competition, TIMA won the Savannah Chatham County Public School System middle school baseball championship by defeating Coastal Middle School, 6-0, in the championship game on April 12. Earlier in the school year, the TIMA softball team accomplished the same feat, winning the SCCPSS middle school championship in the team's inaugural year and also posting a perfer 10-0 record for the season.
The TIMA baseball, which will be honored by Tybee Island City Council on April 27, was led by 8th grader Logan Smith. In addition to being one of the team's best hitters, Smith pitched 12 innings of no-hit baseball in TIMA's two playoff victories over STEM Academy and Coastal Middle School.
Smith pitched a perfect game with 15 strikeouts against STEM, and then followed that performance with a no-hitter against Coastal Middle School. In the championship game, 8th grader Jhett Reeves broke the game open with a triple that scored two runs and TIMA also got contributions at the plate from 6th graders Adan Gallegos and Leland Prewitt.
"All of the credit has to go to (TIMA Athletic Director) Noel Ingram, and (TIMA Principal) Peter Ulrich, because they're the two hearts and souls that got all of this going," said Payton Prewitt, a volunteer coach for both baseball and softball who had all three of his children competing for TIMA in the two sports this school year. "
The baseball team started the season with two losses when Smith was injured, but when Smith returned the team jelled. The team finished with a 5-2-1 overall record, including the two shutout victories in the playoffs.
